Microsoft Purview AI Alternatives by Data Control Point

Microsoft Purview applies several existing data-security and compliance products to AI interactions. The current scope includes data classification, DLP, audit, communication compliance, eDiscovery, retention, insider-risk signals, and Data Security Posture Management. That makes a generic "Purview replacement" a bad buying unit. Nightfall fits browser, endpoint, agent, and MCP exfiltration controls. Google Sensitive Data Protection fits data discovery and inspection APIs. Amazon Macie fits sensitive-data posture in S3. DeepInspect fits authenticated HTTP LLM routes that need identity-bound authorization. A migration may choose one of these products, or combine several, depending on where the protected data crosses a control point.

TL;DR

  • Nightfall fits employee AI use, endpoints, browsers, agents, MCP servers, and exfiltration investigations.
  • Google Sensitive Data Protection fits discovery, classification, de-identification, and inspection through Google Cloud services and APIs.
  • Amazon Macie fits sensitive-data discovery and posture for Amazon S3 rather than Copilot or prompt governance.
  • DeepInspect fits authenticated HTTP model requests that need identity, role, data class, destination, and policy version in one decision.
  • Keep eDiscovery, retention, and communication compliance as named workstreams. A DLP replacement alone leaves those jobs unowned.

Purview for AI is a suite of connected controls

Microsoft's Purview protections for AI overview describes supported Copilot experiences, enterprise AI apps, and third-party generative AI sites as distinct surfaces. Purview can use sensitive information types and trainable classifiers against prompts and responses on supported routes. Audit events can include AI interactions, service context, referenced Microsoft 365 files, and sensitivity labels. Communication Compliance, eDiscovery, retention, and Compliance Manager then operate on the records available to each service.

Data Security Posture Management is the front door tying several of those capabilities together. Microsoft's DSPM for AI documentation describes insights into AI activity, ready-to-use policies, data-risk assessments for oversharing, and compliance controls. The page also identifies different collection routes: onboarded endpoints for supported third-party AI sites, registered ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces, Entra-registered applications, Microsoft Foundry applications and network integrations.

The physical picture matters during design review. Put a browser, a SharePoint site, an internal API and a user's mailbox on four sticky notes. Purview reaches each through a different Microsoft control. Any alternative has to state which sticky note it replaces and which one stays with Microsoft.

Nightfall fits employee, agent and MCP exfiltration controls

Nightfall AI Security covers employee AI use, AI agents, MCP servers, tool calls, prompts, browser activity and endpoint context. Its current product page describes agent and MCP discovery, tool-call inspection, gateway policy, shadow-AI detection, data classification, exfiltration prevention and investigations. Nightfall therefore fits buyers whose Purview requirement begins with data leaving through employee or agent activity rather than Microsoft 365 records management.

Choose Nightfall when the target surface includes desktop coding assistants, browser AI tools, MCP clients or SaaS agents. Build the evaluation around one approved tool and one unapproved route. Send a harmless test secret through browser paste, file upload, and an MCP tool call. Verify discovery, user and device attribution, action, event detail and investigation workflow. A vendor demonstration should show the exact endpoint agent or gateway responsible for each observation.

Nightfall is a security alternative, not a wholesale substitute for Purview eDiscovery, mailbox retention or Microsoft 365 sensitivity-label behavior. Its Firewall for AI Copilots documents a separate integration pattern for application-supplied prompts and responses. Keep that route distinct from endpoint coverage during testing. The Nightfall alternatives guide maps the neighboring product categories from the other buying direction.

Google Sensitive Data Protection fits discovery and inspection APIs

Google Cloud's Sensitive Data Protection is a managed service for discovering, classifying and protecting sensitive data. Google describes organization-level discovery and profiling across supported Google Cloud data services, more than a hundred built-in detectors, custom detectors, de-identification and inspection APIs for text, images and storage repositories.

Choose it when the application team needs a programmable sensitive-data service or the data estate is centered on Google Cloud. A useful fixture sends the same sample through data profiling and the inspection API. The expected result should identify the configured information types, apply the selected de-identification method, and preserve an event the team can associate with the calling workload.

This route replaces a classification or transformation job, not Purview's entire AI governance suite. Google Sensitive Data Protection does not become Microsoft 365 eDiscovery, mailbox retention, communication compliance or Copilot audit merely because it can classify content. The application still owns when to call the API and how to use the result unless another enforcement point surrounds the request.

Amazon Macie fits sensitive-data posture in S3

AWS documents Amazon Macie as a data-security service that uses pattern matching and machine learning to discover sensitive data. It inventories S3 general-purpose buckets, evaluates security and access controls, and can run sensitive-data discovery jobs against S3 objects.

Choose Macie when the requirement is to find sensitive training data, retrieval corpora, exports or model inputs stored in Amazon S3. Seed a test bucket with approved synthetic records, apply an intentionally broad bucket configuration, and confirm that Macie produces the expected inventory, posture signal and sensitive-data finding. The service belongs close to the S3 data estate and AWS security workflow.

Macie is a posture product for S3. It does not inspect a Microsoft 365 Copilot interaction, govern an employee's browser prompt, or authorize an internal application's live LLM request. Its value is still material. A Macie finding can mark a source as restricted before an AI workflow reads it. Another control must enforce that classification when data reaches the model path.

Authenticated HTTP LLM request policy fits DeepInspect

DeepInspect applies enterprise policy to HTTP traffic deliberately routed between authenticated users or agents and LLM endpoints. It uses identity and role context supplied by the application, classifies the request, checks the model destination, and records the resulting permit, redact or deny decision. The record sits outside the calling application's write path.

Choose DeepInspect when the missing question is specific: may this authenticated caller send this data class to this model under the current policy? Test the same prompt under two roles. Change the destination and policy version. Verify the expected decision and reconstruct it later from exported evidence.

DeepInspect does not govern native Microsoft 365 Copilot traffic that never crosses the proxy. It also does not scan browser paste, local files, direct SaaS sessions, STDIO tool calls, SharePoint permissions, mailboxes, or S3 buckets. Purview, Nightfall, Google Sensitive Data Protection, and Macie retain those jobs. The AI DLP versus traditional DLP guide explains why route ownership determines which control can act.

Replacement design needs a surface ledger

A suite replacement should begin with a ledger of current Purview uses. List the data source, interaction route, policy object, enforcement action, evidence destination, retention rule and investigation owner. Then assign an alternative to each row. I would stop a migration review the moment someone says "Nightfall replaces Purview" without showing this ledger.

Use five acceptance scenarios:

  • A labeled SharePoint document used by Microsoft 365 Copilot.
  • A sensitive value pasted into a browser-based AI tool.
  • One MCP tool reading a restricted local or cloud file.
  • An internal application sending a classified payload to an LLM API.
  • A later investigator retrieving the relevant interaction.

The first and fifth may remain Microsoft-owned. Nightfall is strongest on the second and third. DeepInspect owns the fourth when the route passes through it. Google Sensitive Data Protection can classify content before or during an application workflow, while Macie supplies posture for S3 sources. The DSPM for AI guide provides the data-at-rest boundary behind this ledger.

DeepInspect

DeepInspect governs the authenticated HTTP model request after the application supplies identity and role context. It evaluates the request's classification and destination against a versioned policy, then writes an independent decision record before allowed traffic continues.

Native Copilot, browser-only AI sessions, local execution, endpoint activity, data-at-rest discovery and Microsoft 365 records management stay outside that boundary. The clean design assigns those routes to Purview, Nightfall, Google Sensitive Data Protection, Macie or another named owner, then uses DeepInspect where the enterprise controls the model API path.

Frequently asked questions

Which Microsoft Purview AI alternative is closest?

No single option in this shortlist reproduces Purview's combination of Microsoft 365 classification, DLP, audit, communication compliance, eDiscovery, retention and compliance management. Nightfall is the closest for employee and agent data-exfiltration controls across browser, endpoint and MCP surfaces. Google Sensitive Data Protection is the closest for programmable classification and de-identification. Macie covers sensitive-data posture inside S3. DeepInspect covers routed HTTP model authorization.

Can Nightfall replace Purview for Microsoft 365 Copilot?

Nightfall can address adjacent employee, agent, endpoint, browser and data-exfiltration routes according to its documented integrations. Native Microsoft 365 Copilot permission inheritance, sensitivity-label behavior, unified audit records, mailbox-based interaction storage, eDiscovery and retention remain Microsoft-specific controls. A buyer should keep those Microsoft jobs on the ledger unless Nightfall demonstrates an equivalent supported route and evidence artifact for the exact tenant workflow.

Can a cloud data-discovery service stop a live prompt?

A discovery service can classify stored data and produce posture findings. An inspection API can classify application-supplied content. Prevention requires a control point that receives the result before forwarding and has authority to block or transform the request. Test the whole call sequence. A classifier response without a binding policy action leaves enforcement with application code.

Does DeepInspect replace Purview DLP?

DeepInspect governs authenticated HTTP LLM requests routed through its proxy. Purview DLP covers supported Microsoft 365, endpoint, browser, and AI interaction surfaces according to Microsoft's integrations and licensing. DeepInspect cannot intercept a native Copilot request inside Microsoft's service or scan a user's local browser session by default. The products can coexist, with Purview classifications informing gateway policy where the application carries that context.

What should remain after a Purview migration?

Keep a named owner for Microsoft 365 labels and access, AI interaction audit, legal hold, eDiscovery, retention, communication compliance, endpoint controls, browser controls, cloud data discovery and routed model policy. A migration is complete when each job has a tested control and evidence artifact. Removing the Purview license before that map is complete creates gaps that a new DLP dashboard cannot reveal.
