AI Data Security Vendors: Choose by Data State and Enforcement Point
AI data security vendors operate against different data states and routes. Microsoft Purview addresses discovery, protection, and investigation of sensitive-data risk across Microsoft 365, Azure, Fabric, AI apps and agents, and integrated SaaS. Nightfall describes real-time scanning and redaction of AI prompts. This guide separates stored data, employee browser traffic, native SaaS activity, and routed server-side model APIs so buyers can match each control to its sensor, action, and evidence.

Sensitive data reaches AI through several paths. It can sit in Microsoft 365 or Azure, move through an employee's browser, enter a native SaaS assistant, or cross a server-side model API. Microsoft Purview and Nightfall publish different control surfaces for those paths. An inline gateway covers another narrow lane. I would discard any AI data security vendor scorecard that lists "DLP" once and calls the row complete. The data state, sensor, route, and action determine what the control can protect and what evidence it can produce.
TL;DR
- Microsoft Purview covers discovery and protection, plus investigation of sensitive-data risk across Microsoft 365, Azure, Fabric, AI apps and agents, and integrated SaaS.
- Nightfall describes real-time scanning and redaction of AI prompts before sensitive information reaches third-party processors.
- Stored data, employee browser activity, native SaaS AI, and routed server-side APIs need separate rows because their sensors and actions differ.
- DeepInspect belongs only in the authenticated HTTP model route that a customer deliberately sends through its proxy.
Data state comes before vendor name
Begin with four states. Sensitive records may rest in a repository, move through an employee interface, reach a SaaS product, or leave an internal application for a model endpoint. Each state creates a different inspection opportunity. The DSPM for AI guide explains the repository side; this shortlist adds movement and enforcement.
For every state, capture six fields:
- the repository or originating application;
- the acting user or workload;
- the sensor that sees the content;
- the policy engine making the decision;
- the action available at that point;
- the event an investigator can retrieve.
A DSPM scan can find sensitive files in a repository and support an investigation. A browser or endpoint control can inspect employee interaction on a supported device. A SaaS-native policy can govern activity within that service. A model gateway can inspect an application request deliberately routed through it. Combining those rows hides gaps.
Microsoft Purview starts with data posture and investigation
Microsoft's Data Security Posture Management documentation describes discovery and protection, plus investigation of sensitive-data risk across Microsoft 365, Azure, Fabric, AI apps and agents, and integrated third-party SaaS. This places Purview around a broad Microsoft data and compliance control plane rather than one model request.
Purview belongs on a shortlist when Microsoft content and identities, along with investigation workflows, define much of the operating environment. The buyer can assess where sensitive information resides, who can access it, which AI interactions appear on supported surfaces, and what investigation follows.
The product still needs a route-by-route proof. Coverage across AI apps and agents does not imply identical sensors or actions for every application. During a trial, choose one Microsoft 365 interaction and one integrated SaaS route. Add one internal server-side model call. Record what Purview sees in each case and what action is available. Missing coverage should remain a blank row rather than being inferred from the product-family description.
The Purview versus Nightfall comparison provides a deeper migration and trial plan for these two products.
Nightfall centers on prompt scanning and redaction
Nightfall's GenAI security page says the product performs real-time scanning and redaction of AI prompts to prevent sensitive information from reaching third-party processors. That is a concrete control claim tied to content moving toward an AI service.
The buying test should reproduce that path on a supported managed surface. Paste a synthetic customer identifier into a prompt beside benign text that resembles the marker. Capture the redacted payload and SOC event. Repeat through each browser and endpoint route, plus every application route in scope.
Nightfall's prompt claim should stay attached to the deployed sensor. A browser control seeing an employee prompt differs from a connector scanning stored SaaS content. Both differ from an internal application's server-side API call. The first-party page provides the test premise. The buyer's tenant provides the coverage evidence.
The Nightfall alternatives guide maps adjacent browser, SaaS, DSPM, and gateway options when one product cannot cover every route.
Provider filters and gateways occupy narrower lanes
Provider-native filters inspect traffic inside a named model platform or cloud service. They can be a good fit when an organization standardizes on that provider and accepts its policy and evidence model. Their boundary follows the provider route. Calls sent elsewhere need another control.
An inline gateway sits on the customer-controlled HTTP path before the model endpoint. It can inspect prompts and responses crossing that path and apply an action. It also creates a request-level record. Its strongest fit is an internal application or agent using a governed endpoint. It cannot discover stored data across an estate or observe bypass traffic.
Keep those categories separate during procurement:
- DSPM: finds and investigates sensitive data in supported repositories and services.
- AI DLP: inspects content on a supported employee, browser, endpoint, or SaaS path.
- Provider filter: screens traffic inside a specific model or cloud provider boundary.
- Inline gateway: evaluates deliberately routed application-to-model HTTP traffic.
Each category can use similar classifiers. The enforcement point changes the result.
The coverage matrix needs route-level verbs
Build the matrix with exact actions. "Protected" is too vague for a security review. Use discovered, classified, alerted, redacted, blocked, quarantined, or permitted. Add timing before disclosure or during the request. Record actions taken after a repository scan separately.
A practical matrix can be written as route cards:
Stored Microsoft 365 document
Record the repository, label or classification, scan cadence, available remediation, acting identity, investigation link, and export. Purview should demonstrate the documented discovery and investigation path in the buyer's tenant.
Employee prompt to a third-party AI service
Record the managed browser or endpoint requirement, supported destination, classifier, user notice, redacted or blocked payload, and event. Nightfall should demonstrate the real-time prompt path described on its GenAI page.
Native SaaS assistant
Record the SaaS application's own control and any supported integration. The SaaS vendor may invoke its model from backend infrastructure, leaving a customer gateway outside the route. Ask for the provider-side event and contract terms separately.
Internal application model call
Record the application identity context, HTTP destination, gateway or provider filter, prompt and response action, and audit fields. Send one direct call to the model endpoint to test bypass detection elsewhere in the architecture.
Print these cards and pin them beside the architecture diagram. A blank action field stands out immediately; a wide spreadsheet often buries it.
Trial evidence should survive handoff
Use a unique synthetic marker and no live personal data. Run it through every supported path, then give the evidence to an analyst who did not build the test. The analyst should identify the workload and data class, plus the destination and action. The evidence should also show the policy and time. Test false positives and exceptions as well. An approved exception needs an owner, scope, reason, and expiry date.
My preference is to buy the product with narrower claims and reproducible evidence over the product with the broadest diagram. Security operations inherits the events after procurement leaves the room.
The HTTP boundary must remain explicit
DeepInspect can inspect authenticated HTTP model traffic deliberately routed through it. It cannot scan a SharePoint repository or govern a direct personal browser session. It also cannot see a native SaaS call made from the vendor's backend. Local files and STDIO tool calls also sit outside that path.
Purview posture and investigation, Nightfall's supported prompt controls, SaaS-native controls, and a routed gateway can therefore coexist. Their evidence should join through stable identities and timestamps, while each product remains accountable for its own sensor and action.
DeepInspect
DeepInspect covers the internal application and agent lane when authenticated HTTP model traffic is deliberately routed through its proxy. The application supplies identity and role context. DeepInspect classifies prompt content and checks the destination and active policy. It either permits or denies before forwarding, with redaction where policy requires it. It records the decision outside the application's write path.
Keep Purview responsible for the Microsoft data posture and investigation jobs selected in the design. Keep Nightfall responsible for its supported prompt, browser, endpoint, or SaaS paths. Native SaaS AI and stored data retain controls at those surfaces. Local activity does too. DeepInspect should receive only the route-level credit its proxy can prove.

Frequently asked questions
- Is DSPM enough for AI data security?
DSPM addresses where sensitive data resides and who can access it. It also supports risk investigation on supported surfaces. A model request introduces a movement and decision path that may need pre-send inspection and role authorization, with request-level evidence. Use DSPM for posture and repository context, then map separate controls to browser and SaaS routes, plus server-side routes.
- Is Nightfall the same category as Microsoft Purview?
The products overlap around sensitive-data protection, but their public descriptions emphasize different operating contexts. Purview documents discovery and protection, plus investigation across Microsoft 365, Azure, Fabric, AI apps and agents, and integrated SaaS. Nightfall's GenAI page emphasizes real-time prompt scanning and redaction. Compare the exact sensor and action on each required route.
- Can an inline gateway replace Purview or Nightfall?
A gateway can replace or complement the request-path control for internal applications that deliberately route HTTP model traffic through it. It cannot recreate broad data posture, repository scans, native Microsoft investigation, direct employee browser control, or SaaS backend visibility unless those events cross its route.
- What is the first proof-of-concept test?
Use one synthetic sensitive marker in four paths: a stored Microsoft 365 document, an employee browser prompt, a native SaaS assistant, and an internal application model call. Record which product sees each event and what action it takes. Record which evidence fields remain. The resulting gaps define the architecture more accurately than a feature list.
