Fortinet AI security now spans unified governance across network, cloud and endpoint controls plus acquired runtime protection and validation capabilities. This route register separates shadow-AI visibility, model and agent testing, MCP tool controls, multimodal guardrails and HTTP model-call policy so buyers can assign evidence and enforcement to the correct layer.

Fortinet AI Security: Governance, Runtime and Route Boundaries

Fortinet AI security now spans several control surfaces. Its current FortiAI page describes unified governance across models, infrastructure and data, with shadow-AI detection and policy across the Fortinet Security Fabric. Fortinet's August 17, 2026 acquisition of Virtue AI adds agent red-teaming, continuous validation, runtime monitoring and tool-call controls. A buyer should approve those routes separately rather than treating one product-family label as proof that every AI interaction receives the same control.

TL;DR

  • FortiAI unifies governance across Fortinet's network, cloud and security operations footprint, including shadow-AI visibility and blocking.
  • Virtue AI adds agent testing, continuous validation, runtime monitoring and multimodal policy capabilities to Fortinet's portfolio.
  • Build a route register that names the enforcement point and evidence source for each browser, endpoint, model, agent and MCP path.
  • DeepInspect applies only to authenticated HTTP model requests deliberately routed through its proxy, not to adjacent MCP tools or local agent actions.

Fortinet AI now covers multiple security surfaces

The current FortiAI product page presents unified governance as one capability across the Fortinet AI-Native Security Fabric. It describes controls for shadow AI, AI models and data leakage, with policy spanning network, cloud and security operations. The page also advertises detection of more than 6,500 AI application URLs through FortiView for AI and a shadow-AI lockdown capability for unapproved use.

The licensed modules can place controls at a network appliance, endpoint, cloud workload, application layer or AI-specific runtime. Route position determines visible evidence. Ask Fortinet to draw the exact production path for every module, then annotate where TLS terminates and which component makes the allow or block decision.

I would reject any architecture slide that uses a single shield icon over the words "AI estate." Replace the shield with named boxes and arrows. Make every bypass route visible. The drawing should show the browser, agent, MCP server, model endpoint and evidence store.

The AI runtime security controls guide provides a useful control-owner baseline for that exercise.

The Virtue AI acquisition extends testing and runtime protection

Fortinet's acquisition announcement says the transaction was completed and that financial terms were undisclosed. The announcement positions Virtue AI beside FortiAIGate and names four capability groups: agentic-system red-teaming, agent protection and visibility, continuous AI validation, and real-time guardrails for several content types.

The first-party description reaches beyond model prompts. It includes discovery of agents and AI applications, MCP and source-code scanning, behavior monitoring, plus blocks on malicious tool calls. It also describes testing across sandboxed environments and updates to models or fine-tuned policies.

Create one acceptance record for each capability. A red-team record should identify the tested artifact and release. For runtime protection, capture the observed route, policy version and action result. Preserve the MCP server identity, manifest and finding in the tool-scan record. The model-call record should bind the caller, prompt classification and destination to the decision.

This separation follows the same logic as the MCP security best-practices guide: protocol security, tool authority and model-request policy require different tests.

Build a Fortinet route register before procurement

Use one row per route and environment. Each row needs a source, destination, acting identity, transport, enforcement component, policy owner, evidence location, failure posture and rollback test. Include at least these route classes:

  • Employee access to public AI applications: record URL discovery, user and device attribution, prompt visibility, block location and exception workflow.
  • Internal application to model API: identify the API endpoint, workload identity, model credential, prompt policy and response handling.
  • Agent to model: capture the represented user or service, delegated scope, model destination and decision correlation.
  • Agent to MCP tool: record the MCP transport, server identity, tool authority, target system and confirmation rule.
  • Model or agent validation: pin the tested version, fixture set, policy release and acceptance authority.
  • Local or embedded inference: name the host control because traffic may never cross a network enforcement point.

Run one permitted request and one denied request on every route. Then disable the named control and repeat the test. If the evidence record still shows a green status while the request bypasses enforcement, the acceptance design has confused console state with control coverage.

The AI policy enforcement guide is the adjacent reference for request-level decisions. Keep its evidence separate from endpoint, network and tool records.

Compare evidence rather than feature names

Words such as governance, guardrails and runtime security can describe very different mechanisms. Normalize them into testable fields. Detection needs a named event and observed delay. Identify the component that terminates or rejects a blocked operation. The identity field should name a natural person, workload, device or shared service account. Export the audit event outside the console and verify stable identifiers.

Fortinet's announcement says Virtue AI capabilities generate audit-ready evidence for security and compliance reviews. Test that statement with a disputed action. Export paths matter during disputes. Retrieve the event through the contracted path and correlate it with the originating identity, evaluated policy, destination and final result. A screenshot of a dashboard tile is weak evidence because it omits the data contract and retrieval path.

Failure behavior belongs in the comparison too. Disconnect the endpoint sensor, interrupt the inline route and make the validation service unavailable. Record which operations fail closed, which continue, and which only create an alert. Attach those results to the exact module and route in the proposed contract.

DeepInspect

DeepInspect governs authenticated HTTP requests sent by users or agents to LLM endpoints through its stateless proxy. It evaluates supplied identity, route, model destination and prompt classification against policy before forwarding allowed traffic, then preserves a per-decision record.

Fortinet's broader portfolio includes surfaces that remain outside that boundary, including shadow-AI discovery at other layers, model validation and MCP tool activity. A route register shows where the products can complement each other without turning one event stream into proof for another control. Book a technical deep dive at deepinspect.ai.

Frequently asked questions

Did Fortinet complete the Virtue AI acquisition?

Fortinet's August 17, 2026 announcement says it acquired Virtue AI and states that the amount paid was immaterial to Fortinet's business. The page presents the acquired capabilities as additions to Fortinet's Security for AI strategy and existing portfolio. Buyers should still confirm current packaging, entitlement names and support ownership in their quote.

Does FortiAI govern every AI request through one gateway?

The cited FortiAI page describes unified governance across the Fortinet Security Fabric, but it does not establish one universal gateway path for every browser, endpoint, cloud workload, agent and local model. Ask for route-specific deployment diagrams and test the actual enforcement point for each licensed capability.

Are MCP tool calls inside DeepInspect's control boundary?

MCP authorization, tool execution and destination writes sit outside DeepInspect's authenticated user or agent-to-LLM HTTP boundary. A separate model request can enter the boundary when the customer deliberately routes it through the proxy. That request record cannot prove that the MCP tool call was authorized.

What should a proof of concept produce?

Require a completed route register, exported allow and deny events, failure-behavior results, a bypass inventory and a rollback record. The proof should cover the exact modules and environments in the proposed contract. Preserve screenshots only as supporting material; machine-readable events and configuration snapshots carry the acceptance decision.

Can Fortinet and DeepInspect run in the same architecture?

Yes, when their responsibilities are explicit. Fortinet components can retain their documented network, endpoint, cloud, validation or agent-runtime jobs. DeepInspect can evaluate an authenticated HTTP model request that traverses its proxy. Correlation identifiers can join records while each system remains authoritative for its own decision.
