Does Grammarly Train on Your Data? Account Defaults and Controls
Grammarly can use content for model training and product improvement, but the default depends on the account and purchase route. Individual accounts start with training on. Sales-purchased Business, Pro, Education, and Enterprise accounts start with it off. Website-purchased multi-user teams start with it on until an administrator changes the organization setting. Training control also differs from tailored assistance.

Does Grammarly train on your data? Grammarly says its Product Improvement and Training control allows customer content to train and validate models. It also informs product development. The initial setting depends on the account. Individual users start with training on. Sales-purchased Enterprise, Business, Pro, and Education accounts start with it off. A multi-user team bought on Grammarly's website starts with training on until an administrator opts the organization out. That purchase-route detail belongs in every security review.
TL;DR
- Individual Grammarly accounts start with Product Improvement and Training on, and the user can turn it off.
- Sales-purchased Enterprise, Business, Pro, and Education accounts start with the organization setting off.
- Website-purchased multi-user teams start with training on until an administrator opts out for the organization.
- Training control and tailored assistance are separate settings with different data uses.
Does Grammarly train on your data by default
Grammarly's Product Improvement and Training documentation gives a direct answer for individual users. Product Improvement and Training is on by default for Grammarly Free, Premium, and single-user Pro accounts. The control covers content processed by Grammarly, including Grammarly Go. It permits use for model training and model validation, as well as product development.
An individual can change the toggle in account settings.
That user-level choice needs verification on the account that handles company text. A reimbursement receipt or browser extension inventory says nothing about the toggle's state. I would reject a review that treats a paid personal account as an enterprise control because payment alone leaves the training default unchanged.
The concrete evidence is a settings screenshot showing the account email and Product Improvement and Training toggle in the same frame. Add the capture date and account owner to the approval record. The AI vendor due diligence checklist supplies the wider review fields around that evidence.
Team defaults depend on the purchase route
Grammarly applies another starting state to organization accounts bought through its Sales team. Its support page says Product Improvement and Training is automatically off for Enterprise-tier accounts and Grammarly for Education accounts. The same starting state applies to Grammarly Pro and Business purchased through Sales. Content from users in those organizations is excluded from training and product improvement for other customers by default.
Website checkout creates a different result for multi-user teams. Grammarly says those team accounts initially have Product Improvement and Training on. An administrator can opt out for the entire organization. Two companies can therefore use the same visible Pro label while carrying opposite initial settings because one purchased through Sales and the other completed website checkout.
Record the plan and procurement route, then capture the organization-level toggle.
Also record who can change it and how a change reaches the security owner. The AI vendor risk assessment template helps turn those facts into a review record instead of a one-time questionnaire answer.
Training control differs from tailored assistance
Grammarly's Trust Center privacy explanation separates Product Improvement and Training from tailored assistance. The first setting governs use of content to train models and improve the product for everyone. Tailored assistance processes and stores data associated with an account so Grammarly can improve suggestions for that user. Grammarly provides a separate Feature Customization page for those controls.
Turning off Product Improvement and Training therefore resolves one use of content. It leaves account-specific processing and storage under tailored assistance to a separate decision. The support article also says Grammarly may still collect aggregated and de-identified information, such as writing statistics and accepted suggestion types, for product improvement and training.
A useful data inventory lists both switches by name.
It also records the text surfaces where Grammarly runs, because the browser extension can process content inside email, documents, ticket systems, and web forms. One green toggle cannot describe that whole route.
Account transitions can carry settings forward
The same Grammarly support article describes transitions between team and individual accounts. When a user leaves a Business or Education team and becomes a Free user, the team's Product Improvement and Training setting carries over to the resulting individual account. The user can then modify the visible toggle. Offboarding from a managed team can move a person into an individually controlled state whose setting may change later. Security teams should remove Grammarly access to restricted work surfaces as part of offboarding and avoid treating the former organization default as a permanent personal-account control.
Review triggers should include a plan change, procurement renewal, website-to-Sales migration, administrator change, and departure from the team.
Preserve the previous setting with its effective date. The guide to preventing data leaks to ChatGPT addresses the adjacent control problem: sensitive content needs classification before it reaches any approved writing or chat service.
Training assurance and request policy solve different problems
Grammarly controls what happens after its service receives content. An enterprise policy must decide which content may be sent there in the first place. A no-training setting cannot authorize disclosure of privileged email, source code, customer records, or incident notes. Those decisions depend on the authenticated user, data class, destination, and approved business purpose. For browser and desktop Grammarly use, provider controls and endpoint governance own the decision because those hosted interactions may bypass an enterprise AI gateway. For customer-controlled API traffic, an inline policy point can inspect an authenticated HTTP request before transmission. The approval should state which route is covered rather than applying a gateway claim to every Grammarly surface.
The best review artifact is a short account register with six fields: account class and purchase route; organization and training setting; tailored-assistance setting and last verification date. That is boring evidence. I trust it far more than a slide carrying a large green check beside the Grammarly logo.
DeepInspect
DeepInspect can inspect authenticated HTTP model requests that an enterprise deliberately routes through its gateway. It can classify content and enforce destination policy. It can also record the identity and policy version before recording the outcome, all before the approved provider receives the request.
Direct Grammarly browser and desktop activity sits outside that routed boundary unless a supported API request is explicitly sent through DeepInspect. The same boundary applies to hosted account activity. Grammarly's administrator settings and contractual commitments govern provider-side training. DeepInspect governs eligible customer-controlled traffic at the AI request boundary. Book a technical deep dive at deepinspect.ai.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Grammarly Free use writing to train models?
Grammarly says Product Improvement and Training is on by default for individual Free accounts.
The user can turn the setting off in account privacy settings. A company should verify the actual toggle and keep restricted company content out of personal accounts.
- Is Grammarly Enterprise training off by default?
Grammarly says Product Improvement and Training is off by default for Enterprise-tier accounts. The same starting rule covers Grammarly Business and Pro accounts purchased through Sales. It also covers Grammarly for Education. Administrators should still verify and record the current organization setting.
- Does a multi-user Grammarly Pro account start with training off?
The purchase route decides the starting state. A multi-user team bought directly through Grammarly's website starts with Product Improvement and Training on, according to Grammarly. An administrator can opt the organization out. A Sales-purchased Pro account starts with it off.
- Does opting out stop every use of Grammarly data?
The opt-out stops content use for the Product Improvement and Training purposes described by Grammarly.
Tailored assistance has a separate control. Grammarly also says it may collect aggregated and de-identified writing statistics for product improvement and training.
